Classic & Boat Safaris

Experience a classic Big Five safari with game drives and nocturnal adventures in Akagera National Park. A serene boat safari on Lake Ihema offers a different perspective, bringing you close to hippos, crocodiles, and elephants.

Immersive Adventures

Walk 70 meters above an ancient rainforest on the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway, hike to the summit of a dormant volcano, or kayak on the tranquil waters of Lake Kivu as you join the famous singing fishermen at sunset.

Our experts agree that you can comfortably travel any time, but the best time to visit Rwanda can depend on your primary activity, especially primate trekking.

Dry Season

June - Sep & Dec - Feb

These are the peak seasons and the best for gorilla trekking, as the trails are less muddy and the skies are clear. The weather is sunny and pleasant, making it ideal for all-around travel and classic safari viewing in Akagera.

The Rainy Seasons

Oct - Nov & Mar - May

These “green seasons” bring lush landscapes and dramatic skies, which are a photographer’s dream. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe can be easier as the chimps are drawn to lower elevations. This is also the best time for birdwatching.

Permit Considerations

Gorilla trekking permits are in high demand and limited in number year-round. We advise booking your trip at least 6-12 months in advance to secure your preferred dates, regardless of the season.

How difficult is a Rwanda gorilla trek?

A Rwanda gorilla trek can be challenging. Treks last from one to several hours over steep, muddy terrain, so a good level of fitness is required. However, you are assigned a gorilla family based on your fitness level, and porters are available to help. The reward is more than worth the effort.

What is the age limit for primate trekking?

The minimum age for both gorilla and chimpanzee trekking is 15 years old. The minimum age for golden monkey trekking is 12. This makes Rwanda an incredible destination for a family safari with teenagers.

Why are gorilla trekking permits so expensive?

The cost for a permit reflects a "high-value, low-impact" conservation model. This high price point limits the number of visitors, minimizing stress on the gorillas, and directly funds their protection and the development of local communities.

What is the accommodation like for luxury Rwanda holidays?

From sophisticated luxury hotels in Kigali to stunning, world-class lodges overlooking the volcanoes, accommodation is exceptional. Our luxury gorilla trekking Rwanda itineraries feature properties that offer impeccable service and a deep sense of place.
